Show Me Night was great! Thank you for sharing this special time with your child!
This Month
February is full of fun things to learn. The children will learn about Groundhog Day, Chinese New Year, President's Day, Arizona's Birthday, the State flag, desert animals, the five senses, the artist Jackson Pollock (who went to elementary school right around the corner from the classroom), and composer Tchaikovsky. All of this in addition to Valentine's Day songs and poems and the rest of our Montessori curriculum!

Happy New Year
Welcome Back!
January is a fantastic month in my classroom because of the level of the work happening and the excitement of the children. All of the students know what to do, where to go and how to do it. Poetry in motion! Please come and observe this! If you have not seen what a proper Montessori environment looks like-here is your chance! You may come any day you like, please schedule a time with me first, for 30 minutes.
January for the Children
This month, as a group, we are studying the Arctic, Arctic animals and people, snow, the science of color and color mixing, the painter Monet and touching on Martin Luther King, Jr.
Volunteer Hours
The school year is now 1/2 over! If you don't have at least 5 volunteer hours done, you are behind! You are required to have 10 per year and this is the first year those hours are being carefully tracked!
Thank You
I would like to thank all of my fabulous families who contributed to our super fun holiday party! It was a blast!
Dates
1/21- MLK Day-No school
1/30-Show Me Night! More to come on this soon!

United Children's Day!!!
What a fun time! I hope all of you parents enjoyed the celebration! It was wonderful seeing so many of you involved.
November:
November brings the children so many new lessons! We look at Native American culture, the lives of pilgrim children, leaves, new songs and poetry, as well as a study of turkeys!
I have put out the call for more culture a few times this year with little response. Many families have special cultural traditions for the holidays. Please share them with us! Does anyone celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa? Contact me and let's set something up!
Dates:
11/9- Scholastic Books Orders are due. Please order some books! We get free books for the classroom when you order online! ALSO-the holidays are right around the corner, there are plenty of affordable books that would make fun gifts!

United Children's Day
Just a reminder....
Have you moved? Changed jobs? New cell number or work number? Please update your information with the main office. It is imperative that I have your current information for emergencies.
Picture Day is Friday 10/26 first thing in the morning. If you are late, you may miss us. Your order form is in your child's folder pocket. Please return to me by Thursday 10/25.
Fall Carnival
October 27 from 12-4 is our school carnival at main campus. Our classroom booth is the Columbia booth! Thank you for the volunteers who signed up to help run it! Make sure you are there on-time for the shift change so the booth is not left unattended. :) Want to help? You still can. Go to the volunteer spot on the school website and you will find the carnival listed under Ms. Trezise. The more the merrier. AND you need 10 volunteer hours so help out and get them done!
The flier for the carnival mentions having your child wear their cultural costume for the carnival. Just to caution you, the carnival will have food and face paint and bounce houses, and costumes may get ruined in all of the fun.
No Trick-or-Treat Costumes on Halloween Because......
United Children's Day is October 31 at 10:20!
Please join us in a celebration of culture by dressing your child in a costume that represents their cultural heritage and bring a cultural dish to share. We will be having a potluck for the children (adults may join in the feast if there is left-over after the children are served). Not a cook? That's O.K.! We will need some volunteers to bring plates and forks/spoons.
Just and F.Y.I., I only have enough seats for the children in the classroom, so if you are comfortable bringing a folding chair, you won't have to stand or sit on the floor during the feast.

The end of September
Mid-Autumn Festival
I need to thank Joshua's mom, Thuy, for volunteering to share their culture with us! She shared pictures from the Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam and brought Moon Cake for the children to try! We has so much fun making lanterns and trying a new food. Thank you for sharing with us!!!

Eating new foods!
Thank you Mrs. Theisen!
Please share your culture with us. Religious holidays or celebrations or cultural traditions, let me coordinate a time for you to share!
September is ending and so are our solar system studies and apple studies. We looked at all 8 planets in our solar system, constellations, worked with the properties of magnetism, land, water and air, tasted apples and learned about the parts of and apple growth cycles. We have welcomed two new friends, Liam and Reyna, and all of us are hard at work!
October is a time of fun for us! We will learn the parts of the pumpkin, look at lots of Halloween poems, work on exploring the continents of our planet, land and water forms, the composer Bach, and the artist Leonardo DaVinci.

Let me lend a hand
How lucky! You now have your very own child development expert! (That's me, by the way.)
I wanted to post a little about something that is crucial for young children. Discipline. This seems to be a scary word for some parents, but it shouldn't be! Valya Telep, Former Extension Specialist, Child Development, Virginia State University, defines it very easily.
Discipline separates the child's "goodness"from how well he does on a task. Our message now says, "You are OK even when your behavior is NOT OK." We love the child but reject the behavior.
I wanted to post a little about something that is crucial for young children. Discipline. This seems to be a scary word for some parents, but it shouldn't be! Valya Telep, Former Extension Specialist, Child Development, Virginia State University, defines it very easily.
What is Discipline?
Discipline is . .
.
Helping a child learn to get along with his family and
friends.
Teaching a child to behave in an agreeable way.
Allowing a child the freedom to learn from his mistakes and
experience the consequences of his decisions.
Effective discipline is helping, teaching, and learning.
Discipline Is Not Punishment
Some parents think discipline and punishment are the same thing.
Some think discipline is getting a child to behave and teaching him to be
obedient. Some think it is what you do when children are naughty or misbehave.
Whereas punishment focuses on the child, discipline targets
the act. When we punish a child we are in effect saying to him, "You are
loved (or not loved) because of the things you do." Punishment teaches the
child to be "good" as long as we are looking, but as soon as we turn
our heads, watch out!Discipline separates the child's "goodness"from how well he does on a task. Our message now says, "You are OK even when your behavior is NOT OK." We love the child but reject the behavior.
The purpose of discipline is to raise responsible, confident
children who grow up to be persons who think for themselves, who care about
others, and who live satisfying and useful lives.
Resources
I have found these resources extremely useful and use them myself.
1-2-3-Magic by Phelan. This is a great book for stopping annoying/irritating behaviors like whining, negotiating and manipulating. If this method doesn't work for you, then your are not doing it correctly. :)
